Burns Data and Campio Programs

UNICEF has found that 5 million children in Africa die from accidental or environmental deaths, like fires, each year and generally 10 million die from totally preventable causes.  1300 children die or are injured in South Africa per year (these being the most severe cases).  According to Red Cross burns unit, the leading cause of burns injury or death is caused by hot water and fire accidents.
250 children are cared for by Red Cross per month, yet the hospital only has 22 beds.  Less severe cases are referred to clinics and day hospitals for continued   treatment.  6 to 20% of burns cases are reported to be due to abuse.  Socio-economic issues often prevent survivors from receiving ongoing treatment which leaves them vulnerable to infections and possibly death.

The integration of burn survivors is a difficult and slow process and in instances of disfigurement, unlikely.  But we advocate a better quality of life for all survivors and believe in the greatness and strength of the human spirit.

It is our vision to be the catalysts for the transformation, development and healing process of burn survivors.

CAMPIO acts in courage; believes in connectivity, transparency and respect and are committed to greatness.

The CAMPIO Burns Group is on a quest to find the burn survivors of our nation and reconcile them to mainstream society.

OUR MOTIVATION and MISSION

According to the Fire Protection Association of South Africa burns were the second leading cause of accidental deaths in South Africa - Of all bodily injuries, few are more traumatic than burns. By searing through flesh and muscle, destroying nerves and blood vessels, and setting up a fertile breeding ground for infection, burns can cripple, disfigure and kill”.   "The biggest problem (for burn victims) is their fear of being seen in public”; they remain one of the most ostracized and marginalized group and are particularly vulnerable to domestic abuse and “silent violent community crime”.

“Campio’s core mission is to help South African burn survivors emerge from “burns compounds and hiding”.  Our policies will therefore creatively incorporate the needs of wider communities for the empowerment of our mission.  Our key elements for change are literacy; social cohesion, resource and research.  In addition and globally, burns and acid attacks are becoming the most dominant form of abuse in relationships and human trafficking . We will therefore with global insight and in mutual solidarity ardently oppose violence against women and children and the overall violation of  humanity”  **Beulah Kleinveldt

In honor of the memory of Euton Murphy

The Campio Burns Group has lost a dear friend and Secretary of the Board, Euton Murphy who passed away on 4 July 2012. We salute him for his support, input and hands-on attitude and spirit. We will miss his enthusiasm and energy, his honesty, integrity and gift to see the positive in every challenging situation.  He was unselfish.....and thats just a fraction of who he was. We are the better for sharing paths, be it shorter than we anticipated.  Our thoughts are with the family of this amazing soldier who walked and walked and walked.......

The first 48 hours after a burn

The first 48 hours after a burn injury has occurred are the most critical. The challenge for healthcare professionals is to get patients through the first stages of recovery by preventing fluid loss, and preventing and or controlling infection. Infections are a serious threat to burn patients.  In the first 48 hours patients will lose fluids from the vessels, sodium chloride and protein which flow into the injured area causing blisters, swelling, low urine output and low blood pressure. Doctors combat these effects by providing patients with fluids, electrolytes, antibiotics, pain medication, tetanus vaccination and often inserting a catheter. Once the patient has been stabilized doctors and nurses begin cleaning the wounds to prepare them to be covered. Burn patients will continue to lose fluids until their wounds have been covered. Wounds may be covered using ointment and a dressing. However, for more severe wounds a skin graft may be needed. Skin grafts present complications
